My Journey My Disability — and the World Beyond It
Traveling is a right we all have. If we have the means to do so, there should be no limits to where we want to go. But it’s not always that easy and certainly not that cut and dry.
Here’s a little about me and my disability story. I was born with spina bifida and have had multiple surgeries. I honestly was never supposed to really be able to walk and have proudly been able to for more than five decades. I am fortunate to still be considered ambulatory, but through the years, to ensure my enjoyment, I opted to go into a mobility scooter for any trips that involved any amount of walking or standing. So at zoos, amusement parks, grocery shopping and of course travel, I go with my scooter. It was life- changing, but also eye opening.
So now I have AbleTravels.com dedicated to sharing stories about accessible travel which includes success stories and also the hurdles that still exist. In a world full of able-bodied people, we often get overlooked. This site and my passion is about giving anyone with a disability a voice and letting them know the world is accessible if you know where to look.
