As World Autism Month puts a spotlight on inclusion, Carnival Cruise Line is making a meaningful move toward accessible travel. The cruise giant has announced that Celebration Key, its new destination on Grand Bahama, has earned KultureCity’s first‑ever sensory‑inclusive certification, a milestone aimed at making cruising more welcoming for travelers with autism and other sensory sensitivities.
What is KultureCity?
KultureCity is a leading non-profit organization dedicated to sensory accessibility and inclusion for individuals with invisible disabilities, such as autism, PTSD, and anxiety. It partners with venues to provide sensory bags, train staff, and create designated, quiet “sensory rooms” to ensure everyone can participate in community events.
KultureCity also offers a free app to help users identify nearby sensory-inclusive venues and prepare for visits through “social stories”.
What does a sensory inclusion certificate mean?
A KultureCity Sensory Inclusive Certification certifies that a venue, organization, or event is trained and equipped to welcome individuals with sensory needs (such as autism, PTSD, or dementia). It entails annual staff training, the provision of sensory bags (with noise-canceling headphones, fidget tools), sensory signage, and identification of quiet zones.
Key Components of the Certification:
Staff Training: At least 50% of staff undergo mandatory training to recognize and support visitors experiencing sensory overload.
Sensory Bags: Certified locations provide sensory bags containing noise-canceling headphones, fidget devices, verbal cue cards, and weighted lap pads.
Signage & Quiet Zones: Designated spaces are marked for quiet breaks or as “headphone zones”.
App Integration: The KultureCity App hosts a “Social Story,” providing a preview of the venue’s layout and staff for attendees.
Annual Re-certification: The certification requires yearly renewal to ensure staff stay up-to-date.
Sensory Inclusive Cruising
Carnival is the first cruise line to be certified “sensory inclusive” by KultureCity.
Carnival Cruise Line Brand Ambassador John Heald has praised the partnership with KultureCity, highlighting that the line is proud of its crew for taking care of guests with sensory needs. He notes, “Carnival has a fabulous partnership with Kulture City who have graciously provided us with sensory kits for those who need them”.
Carnival has an entire portion of their website dedicated to the KultureCity partnership and being inclusive toward people on the spectrum.
I especially like this line from their website: “Carnival Cruise Line and KultureCity share a heartfelt commitment to acceptance and inclusivity.”
Able Travels take
Partnering with KultureCity to make cruising easier for anyone with sensory issues is a great idea. Cruise ships can be overwhelming for nearly everyone at times, but anyone with sensory issues it can be a deal breaker. So it’s nice to see Carnival extending this to their ports, which can be equally overwhelming. This is exactly the kind of mindset we want to see more cruise lines and more resorts to make travel truly accessible and inclusive.
